Navigating the hardest relationship in your circle

If you haven’t read Why Do You Have A Job Today I would advise you to take some time to read it because today’s perspective is based on that article.

Relationships are difficult to build. As I write this article I think about all the relationships I’ve built over the years and I can tell you that each one has been difficult. However, I think I’m not alone when I say that the most difficult relationship to build and maintain is the one between the employee and employer.

It can be difficult to maintain a positive relationship with your employer because relationships are a two-way street. Both you and your employer has to understand each other’s role to keep your relationship strong.

Your Duty As An Employer

You will find a more detailed explanation of an employer’s duties in my previous article but I will reveal some of them here. It’s important to understand as an employer, you must place your efforts into creating opportunities for your employees.

These points include and sometimes not limited to:

  • Opportunity to be compensated
  • Opportunity to be educated
  • Opportunity to be replaced

As an employer, there will be other issues you may have to address but the main points above (especially the top one) will take you far in developing a relationship between your yourself and your employee.

Your Duty As An Employee

Your role as an Employee is a difficult one. During my career I’ve found that the key to having a successful relationship with your employer is that you simply have little to no control. It’s true, if you’re going into work everyday with the need for compensation then you’ve given control to your employer. Once you get that out of the way you must focus on what the employer needs to remain happy:

  • They need to see results
  • They need to trust you
  • They need to relate to you

As you work for various companies, you will notice there are other points that go along with the three presented above. Keep these three at the top of your priority list and you are off to a great start in strengthening your relationship.
